HEALTHY RECIPE BOOKS : Some of Jess the RD's FAVORITE

So unlike MOST people, I am THRILLED that FINALLY Michigan is getting snow all day.  I have the day off of work today and there is something to savor about sitting on the couch, looking out the window, drinking pumpkin spice coffee, reading a book, and eating a cookie.  It truly is the simple things in life.  While I was sitting on the couch I started going through some of my favorite cook books and it got me thinking...maybe some of you would like to know some of my favorite health inspired cook books...so here we go.

**Most of these books are low fat and low sodium**

1. The Flexitarian Diet - Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, LDN
http://dawnjacksonblatner.com/
I actually saw Dawn speak at a Michigan Dietetic Conference a couple years ago and she is phenomenal. I know I said I would tell you cookbooks but this one is a little bit more... The premise of the Flexitarian Diet states it is "The mostly vegetarian way to lose weight, be healthier, prevent disease, and add years to your life." with the idea that it is HARD to be a vegetarian...instead be a flexitarian.  Start your day with the intention to eat meat free...and if something comes up and you have a meat meal, that is OK (perhaps you are at a baseball game and you LOVE having a good hot dog).  The book has 3 weeks of meal plans with shopping lists and recipes.  I have also included her website which has even more recipes with pictures and nutritional information.

2. The Eat - Clean Diet - Tosca Reno

I must admit I pretty much love everything that has come out through the "Eat Clean" series.  This line of healthy eating books includes magazines, cookbooks, diet books, websites, fitness - pretty much, you name it...they have it.  This book emphasizes that eating clean is eating the way nature intended without processed and refined foods.  These books emphasize lean meats, low fat, gluten-free, natural and fresh products.  It even has a recipe to make yogurt cheese (sounds gross...but it is fun and delicious).  "Eating clean is not a fad but a way of life."

3. Light and Healthy Cookbook - Good Housekeeping Cookbooks
I actually obtained this cookbook in one of my college Dietetic cooking classes (yes, we have those, and they are a fantastic time).  This book emphasizes EASY and DELICIOUS...two of the things my mother in particular MUST have.  If it requires too many ingredients and too much time...it is too hard.  Not suprisingly, many other people feel this way too.  So, if you like easy, light, healthy, and delicious this book is worth your while.

4. Weber's WAY TO GRILL - The Step By Step Guide to Easy Grilling - Jamie Purviance
My fiance got this book as a "new house" present...and I have pretty much stolen it, held it hostage, and declared it to be mine.  This book does not "emphasize" health necessarily but grilling is a great way to keep foods low fat and flavorful.  I find the grill intimidating at times because I  do not always know what to do with vegetables, fruits, kabobs, marinades etc..  This book is creative and explains more than just throwing on a big steak.
